Tampa, Fla. – (September 6, 2018) – Today, Thursday, September 6, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners fulfilled its statutory duty to transmit ballot language to the Supervisor of Elections office for a half-penny sales tax referendum supporting schools for inclusion on the November 6, 2018 ballot.

The referendum would generate approximately $131 million per year for ten years that would be spent on specific projects to improve public schools. Projects are limited to air conditioning replacement, building and renovating schools, maintenance, security and technology. The referendum would also create a seven-member Citizen Oversight Committee, which reports on the spending and progress of all of the money raised by the referendum. Six members of the Citizen Oversight Committee would be private citizens who cannot be affiliated with the district and cannot work on projects funded by the referendum.

Studies show investing in quality schools improves students’ performance, raises property values, creates high-quality jobs, and boosts local economies through spending on needed construction and maintenance. Sales tax is not charged on necessities like groceries and medicine.
