Why #WeAchieveTogether: Teacher Kaneshia Williams
Kaneshia Williams is a 5th grade teacher at Sheehy Elementary School.
What I love about working at an Achievement School is the students. I’ve been at Sheehy since 2004, and I really enjoy the relationship building with the students.
I know that I am making a difference here. I know that the students love me, and I love them. Once you’re able to build a rapport with them, they’ll jump the moon for you.
It’s really important that the students see someone who cares about them first, rather than just focusing on the academics, because that will come along with the love.
Sometimes we need to do a little extra work and be a bit more creative in figuring out ways to help the students, but it’s all to push them personally so that they can catch up with their counterparts.
It’s all about the life-changing conversations and relationships with the students. Many of them come back and tell me what they’ve achieved, like going off to college. Hearing those things really makes a difference for me.
It takes a village and is all hands on deck, but we climb together. These students are very capable; I’ve seen it and I know it, so I’m always going to advocate for them and their families.
The Empowering Sheehy Parents Night (ESPN) event involves churches, businesses and different community organizations providing information to parents to better equip them with resources available in the community. I care about our students and their parents, and I know that if parents are empowered, then the students are empowered.
I highly recommend anyone who wants to be a change in students’ lives to come to Sheehy. Our work is all about the students and the lives of these children. They need teachers who care about them and are willing to dig their heels in and do the work.
That’s why I’m here, because I know they need me. We are all here because we really care about our babies.
