Tampa, Fla. – (January 28, 2019) – Two deserving students, one from Alexander Elementary and one from Ferrell Girls Preparatory Academy, will receive a 2-year college scholarship from Florida TaxWatch, making their dreams of college a more attainable reality.
On Tuesday, January 29, at 8:30 a.m., representatives from TaxWatch will join district and school leaders at Alexander Elementary for the A+ Scholarship Award Ceremony. One student, who was nominated by her principal based on academic performance and the fact the student may not be able to attend college without this scholarship, will receive this generous gift. Alexander Elementary is located at 5602 N. Lois Ave., Tampa.
A similar scholarship ceremony for one student will happen on Thursday, January 31, at 9:30 a.m., at Ferrell Girls Preparatory Academy.
Florida TaxWatch chose Alexander Elementary and Ferrell Girls Preparatory Academy citing their principals as effective leaders in high-risk K-12 public schools. The organization analyzes student performance data over several consecutive years and the results are weighted to find those principals making a difference in communities that need more support and resources.
Kristina Alvarez, Principal of Alexander Elementary and Karen French, Principal of Ferrell Girls Preparatory Academy, will be honored with the Principal Leadership Award from Florida TaxWatch at a ceremony in May. The goal of these awards is to honor those who are improving student achievement in high-risk schools, thereby closing the achievement gap.
