Students Win with WWE Superstar Titus O’Neil’s Support

Tampa, Fla. – (September 13, 2019) – Students from Sligh Middle Magnet School are already champions, but now they will have even more resources and supports to ensure their success, thanks to the hard work and dedication of Thaddeus Bullard, also known as WWE Superstar Titus O’Neil.

Bullard, in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools and the leadership team at Sligh, will unveil significant plans at Sligh Middle Magnet School to boost student performance, support teachers and lift the community.

  • Tuesday, September 17, 4:15 p.m.
  • Tour and presentation: Sligh - Past, Present and Future
  • Sligh Middle Magnet School Media Center, 2011 E. Sligh Ave., Tampa

Bullard will be joined by Hillsborough Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister and Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan.

Bullard will lead a tour of the school to showcase completed projects, such as a first-class fitness and wellness center for teachers and staff, as well as soon-to-be completed projects, including a prosperity center for the community.

Bullard, whose personal upbringing mirrors that of many students at Sligh Middle Magnet School, began focusing his philanthropic work at the school more than a year ago. The product of a rape, Bullard’s mother had him when she was 12 years old. Through the support of nonprofit agencies, Bullard’s path led him to graduate college and serve as an advocate for the underserved.

“Growing up, people believed in me and invested in me when they got nothing in return,” Bullard said. “There is no such thing as a bad kid. Just bad circumstances. I want to do for these students what was done for me. And our region is fortunate to have so many companies and leaders who want to come together to help change the narrative for these families.”

Sligh Middle School is a health and wellness magnet school. This year, the school moved to a “house” system, where students form teams to challenge each other to be the best. Five companies have each sponsored a house: Concorde Career College, Lazydays, Skanska, Cally Bekhor Sports, and PDQ.

"Our district is grateful for the support of Thaddeus Bullard and his foundation. His vision will transform not only the buildings at Sligh Middle Magnet, but also the lives of our staff, our students and their families. Through this partnership and project, we're working to improve the academic and social outcomes for all families," said Superintendent Jeff Eakins.

“In Tampa, we’re blessed to have such a giving community and community partners who, without question, put their money where their mouth is,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “Thaddeus’s heart far outweighs his wrestling presence and this addition to Sligh Middle Magnet will be enjoyed for generations to come.”
