Tampa, Fla. – (October 9, 2019) – Hillsborough County Public Schools knows having an effective teacher in the classroom is the most important factor contributing to student success.

That is why, today, the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association (HCTA) and Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) are pleased to announce a tentative salary agreement for teachers for the 2019-2020 school year.

To ensure our district remains competitive in attracting teachers coming into the profession, the tentative agreement provides an increase to beginning teachers. If approved, new teachers will start at $40,000, bringing Hillsborough in line with neighboring districts.

While the new starting salary enhances teacher recruitment, both the union and district recognize the importance of retaining our quality teachers. The tentative agreement would deliver salary increases to all eligible teachers across our district. Veteran teachers at the top of the salary schedule will also see an increase. The amounts of the teacher raises are determined by experience, effectiveness and other factors and range from $800 to $4,000.

The parties worked diligently on contract language to ensure teacher professionalism is recognized and appreciated to ensure student success.

It is important to note this tentative agreement was reached at the negotiating table and must now be ratified by the members of the bargaining unit and voted on by the Hillsborough County School Board. HCTA represents approximately 14,500 teachers.

All teachers also would continue to receive:

  • A zero premium employee-only health insurance plan paid for by the school district
  • Reduced-price child care through our district’s HOST before- and after-school program
  • Additional pay for teachers working in one of our district’s 50 high needs Achievement Schools
