Tampa, Fla. – (October 16, 2019) – The first CEOs in Schools event is quickly approaching and Hillsborough County Public Schools is excited to announce, every elementary school in our district has been matched to a CEO.

On Friday, October 18, local CEOs and senior executives will spend the day in our elementary schools to see what it takes to educate our children and provide the supports and resources they need to be successful.

Each CEO’s day will look slightly different, as each school has unique needs and goals for their students. The CEO may be greeting students as they come in, attending planning meetings, serving lunches, teaching classes or taking part in other responsibilities that will allow them to engage in daily activities at the school. It will be a learning experience for all and fun at the same time!

The media is invited to visit the schools listed below. Superintendent Jeff Eakins, Vistra Communications CEO Brian Butler and Woodland Johnson, former principal of Mort Elementary (currently General Director, Federal Programs) will visit these schools at the times listed below to meet the CEOs and thank them for taking part in this important program.

  • 7:30 a.m. – Pizzo Elementary – 11701 USF Bull Run Dr., Tampa, Principal Amber Cronin
    • Bemetra Simmons – Florida Managing Director, Mutual of Omaha Bank
    • Activities: Visit with teachers and students in the classroom to see the engaging instruction and learning going on
  • 10 a.m. - Potter Elementary – 3224 E. Cayuga St., Tampa, Principal Sharon Waite

    • Brian Bell - Executive Director, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • Activities: Observe a 5th grade STEM class as students create electrical circuits

This innovative program was founded by Vistra Communications in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools. Vistra CEO Brian Butler was the CEO mentor to former Mort Elementary School Principal Woodland Johnson, through The Council for Educational Change’s PASS program. Brian Butler spent a day at Mort to better understand the challenges and opportunities at the school. The experience created a desire for Brian to challenge other CEOs to get involved in our schools. The partnership between Mort, Brian and his company continues to this day, with regular volunteer visits, support for teacher appreciation events and other school events.
