Tampa, Fla. – (October 22, 2019) – On Wednesday, October 23, a team of geophysical technicians from GeoView will begin mapping and scanning an area on the campus of King High School.

The media is invited to come out at 1 p.m. on Wednesday to get video of the team using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and speak to the president of GeoView, Michael Wightman. Tanya Arja and other district personnel will also be on site to provide media access. Please enter off 56th Street, in the grassy parking area where the school buses are located. This will be the only media availability on campus.

Ever since this came to our district’s attention last Thursday, we have been working with city and county officials, including the county historian, to review any documents available.

On Tuesday, another document surfaced – a city resolution in 1937 – detailing when the city planned to put the land to use as a cemetery. The resolution describes a tract in the northeast corner of the property – a different location than previous documents, which referred to the southern part of the property.

Our district will follow all leads and will first start scanning in the south end of the property as previously planned. If no signs of a cemetery are found, the radar scanning will move to the northeast corner.

GeoView is based in St. Petersburg and specializes in a variety of surface geophysical services, including archaeological studies. They will collect data and review what they discover with archaeologists.

Our district first received information from an individual last Thursday of a possible unmarked cemetery for indigent citizens on the school’s campus. The documents we have reviewed so far – including an appraisal and deeds, aerial maps and historical county and school records – have conflicting information.
