Tampa, Fla. – (December 5, 2019) – The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County is partnering with Hillsborough County Public Schools to provide a great opportunity for students to receive their flu shots.

The Florida Department of Health has seen a spike in the number of flu-like illnesses in students who attend public and private schools throughout Hillsborough County.

The department will offer no-cost flu shots at five flu clinics across the community. There are no out of pocket expenses, but a family’s insurance company may be billed if the insurance policy will cover the shot. Students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The flu shots are first come, first served while supplies last.

The flu vaccine clinics will be held at five locations:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 10, 5-7 p.m., Sickles High School, 7950 Gunn Hwy, Tampa, FL 33626
  • Thursday, Dec. 12, 5-7 p.m., King High School, 6815 N 56th St, Tampa, FL 33610
  • Saturday, Dec. 14, 9-11 a.m., Jefferson High School, 4401 Cypress St, Tampa, FL 33607
  • Tuesday, Dec. 17, 5-7 p.m., Riverview High School, 11311 Boyette Rd, Riverview FL 33569
  • Thursday, Dec. 19, 5-7 p.m. Plant City High School, One Raider Place, Plant City, FL 33563

The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County is recommending that parents monitor their children for symptoms such as fever, cough or sore throat. Parents are asked to keep their children at home if they develop these symptoms. Children should stay at home until they have no symptoms for 24 hours, without using any anti-fever medications like Tylenol or Advil.

Our schools are also encouraging good preventative measures, like washing hands often and making sure children and adults cover their noses and mouths when sneezing or coughing. Our custodial teams are also frequently cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces on our campuses.

In years past, a third party came in to our schools to provide flu shots to students. That was not possible this year, due to staff limitations with that third party organization.

Flu shots are the best way to avoid getting the flu. The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County wants to ensure families have several options available so families can keep their children healthy this year.
