Tampa, Fla. – (April 19, 2016) – Seminole Elementary is celebrating 100 years of excellence on Thursday, April 21, with an open house, tours of the school, and historical artifacts on display.

The school’s original location in 1915 was on the grounds of the present day Seminole Heights Methodist Church on the southeast corner of E. Hanna Avenue and N. Central Avenue. In 1921, the decision was made to move the school’s location across the street and in late 1922, the school opened at its new location.

In 1922, Seminole Elementary was the first school to have bubblers, the modern day water fountain, equipped with iceboxes. In 1923, the school placed a time capsule in the gateway posts placed at the front of the school.

An extensive construction project took place in 1988, adding the Media Center, a Multi-Purpose Room, a Music/P.E. suite, and three separate buildings that would house 12 classrooms.

Media will have two opportunities for pictures/video and interviews:

The Open House is Thursday, April 21, from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., with a presentation from alumni at 4:30 p.m. A Gala (student dance) will be held from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.

The celebration will continue on Friday, April 22, at 8 a.m. when students will take their annual Pledge to Graduate Walk. The entire student body will walk 12 blocks from Seminole Elementary to Hillsborough High School, pledging to continue to do their best, work hard, and graduate from high school. Once they arrive at Hillsborough High School, they will be greeted by the HHS band and ROTC. This is the 21st year of the school's annual Pledge to Graduate Walk.
