Tampa, Fla. – (June 2, 2016) – Fifth graders at Roland Park K-8 Magnet School for International Studies have been offered the unique opportunity to meet with U.S. Veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom.

On Monday, June 6 - the 72nd anniversary of D-Day- students will take part in a panel presentation with the veterans from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. in the Roland Park Media Center. Roland Park K-8 is located at 1510 N. Manhattan Ave., Tampa.

The 5th graders have been learning about the U.S. Armed Forces and the major conflicts involving U.S. troops. Two units of inquiry, which are part of the IB program, “Where We are in Place and Time” and “Sharing the Planet” incorporated lessons about the branches of the military. Students have learned about the organization of the U.S. Government and the responsibilities of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches as well as the difference between enlisting and being drafted; and the difference between a Congressional Declaration of War and Executive Action.

Students worked collaboratively to create presentations and display boards and presented them to classmates researching the other branches of the military. During the event on Monday, students will meet with the veterans during the panel. Afterwards, they will enjoy refreshments and showcase their military projects.
