District hosts celebration of reading, readers and creators
The inaugural Student Literacy and Media (SLAM) Showcase took place on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at the Tampa Convention Center. The SLAM Showcase was coordinated by the Library Media Services department of Hillsborough County Public Schools, along with Library Media Specialists at each participating school site.
Throughout the school year, K-12 students across the district read books from the Florida award nominated lists for their grade level (Sunshine State Young Reader's Award, FRA Award & Florida Teens Read Award) and created 2D Art and Video Book Trailers inspired by the books. Additionally, students each wrote a brief "Reader's Statement" to explain how they connected to & were inspired by the book(s).
Each participating school site held a SLAM Showcase to exhibit their students' works and selected exemplary pieces to submit to the district SLAM Showcase Event. At the district SLAM Showcase on March 22, approximately 650 students K-12, representing 150 schools came together for a energy filled celebration and showcasing of their work.
Students, library media specialists, teachers, administrators and families were treated to a Festival of Arts & Film showcasing students' works, author presentations from authors who were featured on the award nominated lists, a complimentary author signed book, and time to take pictures & get autographs with the authors. This year's featured authors were Kevin Sherry, Cassie Beasley, S.J. Kincaid and Jenn Marie Thorne. Students and adults alike beamed about how SLAM Showcase was a wonderful celebration of reading, readers and creators!View Full Album
