Tampa, Fla. – (May 3, 2017) – Hillsborough County Public Schools along with nine community partners will kick off this summer’s reading challenge, at the Summer Reading Summit on Tuesday, May 9, from 10 – Noon, at Amalie Arena.

Superintendent Jeff Eakins and School Board members, along with the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library and other local agencies will spotlight free reading resources, incentives and contests supporting summer reading. The community-wide program, Read on myON, which was launched in 2012, helps to prevent summer slide, increase literacy rates, and provide children with equitable access to a large collection of digital books.

Children can lose up to two months of reading proficiency over the summer by not consistently reading at home.

“Summer reading with myON is the perfect opportunity for children to read for fun, learn new things and explore faraway places. I hope everyone will encourage their children to get involved in high quality summer reading programs. We want to ensure our students have all of the resources they need as we prepare them for life.” said Superintendent Jeff Eakins, Hillsborough County Public Schools.

The summer reading challenge will be awarding experiences to our students and families as reading incentives. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ top prize includes a “Behind the Scenes Tour” of One Buc Place. In addition, the Glazer Children’s Museum will have prize packages and more.

The Read on myON initiative has engaged students, parents, teachers and administrators and made literacy a top priority. Since the start of the program, more than 245,000 students have read more than 11.1 million books.

Media interested in visiting a school or speaking to a teacher about the effects of summer slide can contact Tanya Arja in the Communications Office.
