Name Recommendations Being Accepted for K-8 School

Tampa, Fla. – (November 1, 2017) – Hillsborough County Public Schools will be converting Van Buren Middle School and Cahoon Elementary School into a new PreK-8 model for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. In preparation for the conversion in the North Tampa Rowlett Park neighborhood, the district is in the process of considering a new name for this school. 

The community is urged to submit recommendations which may be considered in naming the school. Recommendations can be emailed to [ ] or mailed directly to the attention of Owen Young, Area VII Superintendent, at Area VII District Office, 1015 N. Parsons Ave., Seffner, FL 33584. All submissions are due by Friday, November 10, 2017.

The community is also invited to attend a Community Forum at Van Buren Middle School on Thursday, November 2, at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria. This is an additional opportunity for area residents to provide input regarding name options for the new PreK-8 school. Van Buren Middle School is located at 8715 North 22nd Street, Tampa.

All names submitted for recommendation will be presented to the Hillsborough County School Board for their consideration at the December 5, 2017 school board meeting.

Cahoon Elementary School opened in 1951 to honor Blanche M. Cahoon, who served Hillsborough County Public Schools as the supervisor of art education in the 1940s. Van Buren Middle School opened in 1963 and was named after the 8th president of the United States, Martin Van Buren.
