Macfarlane Park 5th Grader Named Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest Winner

Congratulations to Ayan Nallamshetty, a fifth grader from MacFarlane Park Elementary School for being named the winner of the Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest. The essay contest is sponsored by Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott and is open to students thoughout the state of Florida at three levels (elementary, middle and high).  
The theme "A Recognition of the Role of Hispanic-Americans in Shaping Florida Todayset the focus of the essay contest this year which required students to write about the impact of Hispanic Floridians on our state's history and culture. Ayan wrote about the influence Mr.Vicente Martinez Ybor had on shaping our state. He did research on why Mr. Ybor came to Florida and how his cigar industry influenced Tampa and Ybor City today. 
Ayan was selected as the contest winner out of hundreds of elementary entries throughout the state. As the winner, he received a 4-year Florida Prepaid College Scholarship. Ayan and his family received an invitation from Governor Scott to visit Tallahassee where they were treated to a reception at the Governor's mansion with the other contest winners and their families.
