Tampa, Fla. – (December 15, 2017) – The holiday season always brings out the spirit of giving, but there’s a deeper purpose driving the Newsome High School Criminal Justice Toy Drive for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital cancer patients.

Criminal Justice Teacher, Carlos Somellan lost his adult daughter -a mother of a 10-year-old son- to cancer. Days before her death, she told her dad that she couldn’t imagine kids suffering with the pain she felt. He promised her, he’d help kids battling cancer.

The retired Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant launched the toy drive last year, after he started teaching at Newsome High. Somellan wants students to understand that law enforcement isn’t just about arrests, it’s also about being compassionate and helping the community. This year, students have collected more than 100 toys.

On Friday, students will be boxing up the toys during 5th period (10:52-11:35 am), loading up the toys after school (3pm), and delivering them to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital (around 4pm).

Media is invited to join us at the school and/or hospital.
