Strawberry Crest JROTC Sends Deputy Burgess into Retirement with a Ceremonial Farewell
JROTC Cadets were heartbroken to learn that their School Resource Officer, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy Maze Burgess was planning to retire.
Deputy Burgess has served Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office with distinction for 30 years. He began his career as a Corrections Officer at the old Morgan Street Jail. While working in the Juvenile Division Burgess knew he wanted to start influencing youth during their formative years. He became a School Resource Officer (SRO) and served 3 years for East Bay High School and 3 years at Spoto High School. When Strawberry Crest High School was built 9 years ago, Deputy Burgess was selected to be the first and only Charger School Resource Officer.
"We wanted to do something extra special for our longtime SRO to let him know how much we appreciate him, " said Cadet 1st Lieutenant Louden Everhart, the Delta Company Commander. Delta Company held a formation in the school court yard and surprised Deputy Burgess. Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Arely Garcia presented Deputy Burgess a commemorative Charger Certificate of Appreciation, signed by most of the battalion's cadets. They also presented the Deputy with a JROTC Cap to remind him of his times at Strawberry Crest High School. Afterwards, every cadet personally thanked the Deputy with a hearty handshake.
Deputy Burgess plans to transition to the civilian sector as a college professor. The JROTC Cadre and Cadets of the Charger Battalion wish Deputy Maze Burgess the best of luck in his new endeavors. His legacy will live forever at Strawberry Crest High School.
