Slither and splash your way to Nature’s Classroom at open house this Saturday
Bring a carload of family and friends to the Woods, Water and Wildlife Celebration at Nature’s Classroom on Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This special place will be open to the public for this one-day event!
Since 1968, Hillsborough Schools’ student have attended attend Nature’s Classroom, where they spend their days in River Exploration and Shoreline Sampling, where they test the health of the river/test for biodiversity. Students also take upland and wetland hikes and visit animal compounds with mammals, amphibians and reptiles. They also break into groups for orienteering lessons, where they navigate their way through the with a compass and build shelters in the woods to learn survival techniques.
For over a decade now, Nature’s Classroom has opened its doors to the entire community for an open house where, for one day, not only Hillsborough County students can experience the program but the entire family. It’s a fundraiser that supports the medical needs and nutrition of the animals on site. This year’s event is being held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Gate entry is $10 per carload. This is a cash-only event and there are no ATMs on site. There will be food trucks on site, children's activities, animal experiences, hikes, a shoreline sampling experience and exhibitors.
During the open house event you can also learn more about the summer camp opportunities at Nature’s Classroom. SWFWMD Water Adventure Camp is a free program sponsored by SWFWMD for exiting fourth through seventh graders. There are four sessions that are a week long, where 40 students each week get the opportunity to experience Florida’s amazing water resources, animals and plant communities within the Hillsborough River Watershed.
Camp participants will enjoy a boating adventure, shoreline sampling and an off-site field trip to Crystal Springs Preserve. There will also be 2018 Summer Day Camps available for pre-K through eighth grade, Monday through Thursday for a weekly fee.
